What an incredible day at NMSAS Recovery Center!

This afternoon, we had the joy of hosting a free family BBQ for our clients, families, staff, and community members. We shared hot dogs, potato salad, chips, desserts, sunshine, laughter, and a whole lot of conversation.

And while the food was great, the real gift of the day was something much deeper.

It was connection.

At NMSAS, we believe recovery is about more than appointments, treatment plans, medications, counseling sessions, and clinical services. All of those things matter deeply. They save lives. They create structure, stability, and support. They help people move forward.

But recovery also happens in the simple, human moments.

It happens when someone feels welcomed.

It happens when a person is greeted by name.

It happens when families can sit together outside and enjoy a meal without judgment.

It happens when laughter fills a space that may have once felt heavy.

It happens when people realize they are not alone.

For many of the people we serve, connection has not always been easy. Addiction, trauma, stigma, poverty, grief, mental health challenges, and broken systems can leave people feeling isolated or unseen. Sometimes people come to us carrying not only the weight of substance use, but also the weight of being misunderstood, dismissed, or judged.

That is why days like today matter so much.

A BBQ may seem simple. Hot dogs and chips may not sound like much. But when people are gathered together in a place where they are welcomed, respected, and treated with dignity, something powerful happens.

Community begins to form.

People who may have only known each other in passing get a chance to talk. Staff and clients get to share space outside of the usual rhythm of services. Families get to be included. Children get to see a recovery center not as a scary or clinical place, but as a place where people care, laugh, serve, and show up.

That matters.

Because we are not just serving “clients.” We are serving people.

People with stories. People with families. People with hopes, histories, setbacks, strengths, and futures. People who deserve to be met with compassion. People who deserve a place at the table.

At NMSAS, we are committed to being more than a clinic. We are becoming a recovery center in the fullest sense of the word—a place where people can receive care, yes, but also experience belonging. A place where recovery is supported through treatment, peer support, community, education, harm reduction, and human connection.

We know that recovery does not happen in isolation. It happens in relationship.

It happens when people are surrounded by support.

It happens when shame is replaced with dignity.

It happens when barriers are lowered and doors are opened.

It happens when someone says, “You are welcome here.”

Today was a reminder of the kind of community we are trying to build every day.

Not a perfect community. Not a community without struggle. But a community rooted in hope, honesty, compassion, and the belief that people are always worth showing up for.

We are deeply grateful for every person who joined us today. Every smile, every conversation, every plate shared, every laugh, and every moment of togetherness reminded us why this work matters.

To our clients: thank you for trusting us to walk alongside you.

To the families and loved ones who joined us: thank you for being part of the circle of support.

To our staff: thank you for the heart you bring to this work, not just in the big moments, but in the small daily acts of care that often go unseen.

And to our wider community: thank you for continuing to help us build a place where recovery can flourish.

Today was more than a BBQ.

It was a picture of what recovery can look like when people are welcomed, supported, and connected.

And we are honored to keep building that kind of space together.
