Recovery is about more than stopping the use of substances. It is also about rebuilding trust, creating new routines, discovering new interests, and finding people who understand the journey.
That is why recovery groups matter.
A gratitude group, book club, movie day, or simple conversation may not look like treatment in the traditional sense, but these spaces can become an important part of healing. They give people a reason to show up, something positive to look forward to, and an opportunity to connect without judgment.
We often hear that connection is the opposite of addiction. Addiction can isolate people from their families, friends, communities, and even themselves. Recovery begins to reverse that isolation. It reminds us that we are not alone, that our voices matter, and that we still have something to offer.
Connection does not always have to begin with a deep conversation. Sometimes it begins by sharing something you are grateful for. Sometimes it happens while discussing a chapter in a book, laughing during a movie, or eating popcorn with someone new.
These ordinary moments can become meaningful building blocks in recovery.
At NMSAS Recovery Center, we are creating more opportunities for people to connect, participate, and belong.
Wednesday Gratitude Group
Our Wednesday Group is centered on gratitude and creating space to recognize the good that can still be found—even during difficult seasons.
Gratitude does not mean pretending everything is okay. It means learning to notice what is helping us keep going: a supportive person, a safe place, a new opportunity, a small victory, or simply another day.
This group is open to all adults. Everyone is welcome to join us, whether you are new to recovery, have been walking this road for years, or simply want a positive and supportive place to connect.
Thursday Book Club
Our new Thursday Book Club offers another way to build community through shared reading, reflection, and conversation.
You do not need to be an expert reader or have all the right answers. Book clubs are about hearing different perspectives, exploring new ideas, and discovering how someone else’s words may connect with our own experiences.
It is also a chance to slow down, enjoy something together, and form relationships around more than appointments, treatment plans, or past struggles.
Movie Day: Friday, July 24
We are also hosting a Movie Day on Friday, July 24, with free popcorn.
Movie Day is an opportunity to relax, have fun, and spend time with others in a welcoming recovery-centered environment. Sometimes fellowship looks like serious conversation. Sometimes it looks like sitting together, sharing popcorn, and enjoying a movie.
Both matter.
Recovery is strengthened when people have places where they are known, welcomed, and encouraged to keep showing up. These groups are not about pressure or perfection. They are about creating room for connection.
Because for us, that means recovery should not have to happen alone.
